The regret

It's now 2325. I was just about to head home. I figured I might as well refresh my inbox before I leave. Staring at me is an email from a Microsoft contact. They will be pursuing other candidates whose background and abilities more closely match their needs at this time.

That's more like it. A response. A rapid response. A very rapid response. Well, I'm not laughing as hard as I was before, but it's been fun all the same.

It's back to business as usual tomorrow, or as we used to say in primo, "back to boiro".

Carrie sent me an email.
Don't worry, another opportunity might just arise.

Looks like I need not bother then. In any case I can't get out of here. I am bound with iron chains for the next two years.

What kind of C++ did they want? The apps kind, the drivers kind or what?

Yeah. For some reason, this morning I'm rather sombre and depressed. Could hardly get out of bed today morning. Strange.

Anyway, do bother. It'd be really fab if you got to go. As I always say, if they don't take you, who will they take.

C++ is C++, well until the next proposed version, tentatively called C++0x! I didn't ask about details on what kind if application it would be used for, but you can do that. She's really nice.

Hi!!!! I should have read this post before the other one. Well, all you have to do now is dust yourself off and try again... In a few years when you're sucessful and famous at another place and your biography comes out Bill Gates will be kicking himself for hiring the people that didn't have the good sense to see what an asset you are.

Well Here are a few tips for the job hunt that really helped me out, they are particularly good if looking for a job in states and UK but they should work perfectly for safaricom and kenyan banks too.

But first of all the two all important cliches that are cliches because they are very true.... 1.Contacts and networking. Its a fact that most people got their jobs because someone they knew told them about it or helped them in some way to get it, so utilise all your contacts, your parents contacts, friends e.t.c
2. Mass mailing and emailing of generic CV's to anonymus people is ineffctive. Most of them get binned.

So here's the laser strategy for getting a job that works like a charm.

1. Look for two companies that you would like to look for and do an in-depth research into their mission statement, history and background, goals, strategies, e.t.c
2. Call up the companies and ask to speak to the HR or hiring manager. Ask for any open positions that they currently have and what type of people they are looking for for these postions. If you have a specific position you want ask if they need someone for it or call the department head and ask if he or she is looking for someone.
3. Custom make your CV for this particular position and company using all the information you have and any buzz words or statements that you noticed are used a lot in that company e.g. focus on customer, diversity e.t.c
4. Address your CV and cover letter to the person that you spoke to. (so you sould have gotten their correct name and address) Express mail the application to them. Email it if they asked you to and gave you the address. In the cover letter you can say something like Thank you for taking the time earlier to discuss this position with me or from our previous converstation i dedused that.. e.t.c just mention that you've already spoken.

This method worked perfectly for me. I called the hotel on a Monday and sent the Cv by email the same day. By Friday the same week they had faxed me the job offer letter. I guess it all depends on whether they are hiring at the time you call, but even if they are not you can send in a CV for future consideration and if you really want to work for a particular company (e.g. microsoft or safaricom) you can call every month or something to see if anything came up, people quit jobs all the time.

Hope this helps :)

Am I an asset? Perhaps if I hear it often enough I'll believe it.

Anyway, KenyanGal's tips seem pretty decent. I'd never thought of actually calling up a HR person. Very forward. Apparently it works.
